Be a guest

Invite us over!

Whether it's a fair, art show, lecture, tai chi, history walk or, well almost anything, we will try and come to you to chat 'on location'!

We'd have to set things up several days beforehand, and remember that we need time to record with you, edit it, and include it in the once-a-week show! So please get in touch in good time. (Seriously, we have no trouble recording a chat several weeks or even more than a month in advance so it's done at a convenient time - and we may even record more than one chat while we are with you to include in the show another time.)

It'd be great if you can arrange a few people for us to talk to, and to be somewhere where there's some sound of what we're talking about! That could be the motor and horn of a vintage car, pots and pans in a kitchen, a tennis match taking place, or even general hubbub. It all helps colour the story and bring it all alive - and so make a more interesting listen.

Also good is if there's something for us to do: it's much more interesting and involving if you can demonstrate what's we are there to see, and we can perhaps have a go too!

We could talk via your laptop

If we can't meet up in person, or if time is tight, we could talk and record a chat online.

We use a service called Cleanfeed ((https://cleanfeed.net/). It's a bit like Zoom that you may be familiar with, it's free and you don't need to download anything to use it. Another advantage is that it's easy to use and gives good audio.

When we have arranged a time to talk, we'll send you a link on an email, that you click to connect. It's OK, we can test it out and there's no time -pressure because it's not live!

There are some things that you can do, please, to make your audio sound clearer.

  • It'd be great if you have a microphone headset to use - but it's not imperative
  • If you are in a room with lots of shiny or polished surfaces, then move to a space with soft furnishings if you can. A kitchen or bathroom is not a good place to record because the hard surfaces can make you voice sound echoey.
  • Glass windows can also affect a recording badly. Try closing blinds or curtains.

You may want to make notes before we chat, but please don't read them out like a script, as it doesn't sound natural and conversational. Talking of which, we love to use names in interviews, because we're friendly like that!, so get ready to call Peter, "Peter"!

We could talk on WhatsApp or Facetime

You would need to have WhatsApp installed on your phone, and add us as a contact.

Facetime Audio works between iPhones, so you'd have to have one of the those, as we do. It's OK, we don't need to use the video function!

With both WhatsApp and Facetime it's just like talking on the phone, but the calls are much clearer than a normal mobile phone call.

We could talk on your mobile or landline phone

Perhaps you don't have a computer or iPhone and don't want to download WhatsApp.

Maybe we can't sort a time that's convenient for you and us to meet.

That's OK, we can call you on your mobile, or on your landline.

We try and keep this as a 'last resort' though, because the quality is less good than all the other options and for that reason it would only be for short interviews. So a face-to-face meeting is not only more friendly and can give us some lovely atmospheric sound - it also means you're likely to get more 'air time' for our chat!
